Women's Rights Solution and Benefits

Tue, 06/01/2010 - 1:09PM by LauraJoy 0 Comments -

There are a multitude of programs and organizations that are solely dedicated to helping the women of today’s society. For instance, there are hospitals and welfare programs such as the Woman, Infant and Children Program (WIC) that help to assist mothers with the supplies needed to take care of the infant. Other programs help to spread awareness of harmful diseases that greatly affect women as well as programs to extend the knowledge of woman abuse. I think that all programs, organization, research facilities, hospitals, awareness groups and independent functioning groups should come together and establish one supranational organization that is completely committed and devoted to the service of women and children. This way, all groups will can become interconnected and furthermore broaden the service scale to woman, not just in the United States, but worldwide.
Benefits:
Having this large organization can further increase the dominance of the female leadership as well as their profile among world leaders. No longer will a woman be thought of as a standard house wife but as a strong woman whom is greatly respected among all genders. This can also open new opportunities to higher jobs positions. In today’s society, especially in the United States, women are thought of as “sex toys”. Through movies and magazines to T.V. commercials and music, women are not thought of as country leaders. This specific organization will take the time out to educate the women of today’s modern day society. This will definitely increase the woman’s population in the government world. The main purpose of the organization will be to encourage women to explorer their opportunities and realize that there is a wide range of careers that they can chose from. With this encouragement and support, the number of women in high ranking positions will increase substantially. This will eliminate a good portion of the cost of welfare and child support because woman will now be able to provide for themselves.

How does Women's rights tie into Human Geography?

Fri, 05/28/2010 - 8:35PM by LauraJoy 0 Comments -

  • In Power Relationships, when the U.S. government began to count value of goods and services produced within the state borders, they did so with the assumption that the work of the household is reserved for women and that this work does not contribute to the productivity of the states economy.
  • GNI which is the most commonly used statistic on productivity, does not evaluate work at home. The GNI doesnt include unpaid labor of women in the household such as cooking and cleaning nor the work done by rural women in LDCs. If women were added to the GNI of the world then it would multiply by 1/3.
  • Periphery women produce half of all the food, build homes, plant and harvest crops, make clothes, etc.

Women have changed history by sacreficing their lifes. One is the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in which 146 garment workers, almost all women, died due to managers locking the doors to prevent them from leaving work. Women as high as 9 and 10 stones, jumped to their deaths to avoid the fire while others were left inside to suffer. This led to the establishment of safety standards and spurred growth of international ladies' Garment Worker union. This union fought for better and safer working conditions for sweatshop workers in the industry. One tragic incident of women, changed the lifes for others in later years. Women have paved the way for the next generation of women to succeed and continue in their footsteps in improving women's rights as a human being.

Why is women's rights important?

Fri, 05/28/2010 - 3:58PM by LauraJoy 0 Comments -

Women's rights is important because women often work more than men but are paid less, which is why women suffer the most poverty. It is not right for one gender to be superior than the other! Women fight for the opportunity to have the same options that men are given. Starting with the right to vote which progresed into many other things such as the right to hold office. Women are now challenging men at their own game. Hilary Clinton challenged the all male presidential race for presidency. Even though she lost it, it struck recognition in all Americans and others around the world. Woman today can now enlist in the Army which was a major controversial subject and still is today. Women have also succeed in numerous careers and have led to inspiring dedications such as women in the film industry, movies have shown women less in housewife roles and more in strong roles. For example, the movie G.I Jane, features a female woman who exceeds further than men when she is accepted into the army. Woman are no longer seen as just vulnerable and under mens control but now are a strong, powerful gender with a demand to be heard and respected by all.

India

Fri, 05/28/2010 - 3:20PM by LauraJoy 0 Comments -

Past: Women would hold jobs outside of the house such as a teacher, actress, singer,or even Devadasis (servants of gods). Woman would do household chores as well as assist the husband in his job. In the 6th century, girls were married at 6 to 8 years old and continued to modern times. A pratice seen in the past and present is the wearing of a bindi, a red dot on a woman’s forehead. This is from ancient India and symbolized marriage. It represented a woman’s energy and was believed to protect the woman and her husband.

Present: The expectations of women are followed by their caste. According to the UNICEF up to 50 million girls and women are missing from India’s population as a result of gender discrimination. Dowry Deaths, (which is when a dowry is given to the groom from the bride's family but if they do not met his demands then he kills the wife and moves on to the next girl), are a huge thing in India. When a women is raped it is the fault of the women and a disgrace to the community. Also there are complex rules of veiling the body and avoiding public appearance for women in India.

Uganda

Fri, 05/28/2010 - 2:53PM by LauraJoy 0 Comments -

Past: A woman had the responsibility of taking care of children and the elderly, food preparation, and household management. Girls, at a young age are taught the ways of cooking, basketry, pottery, childcare, dressing, and any other functions related to organizing a household. Within 1 year of marriage, women are expected to concieve a child. The more wives a man has, the more he is regarded in society. Women are clearly beneath the men in Uganda. Women were expected to kneel when speaking to a man.

Present: 55% of women are illiterate. The more children women have, the more wealthier they are considered. If a couple is not able to have children then the women is blamed. There are no laws to protect women from violence towards them. Also women cant keep their children in divorce.

Guatemala

Fri, 05/28/2010 - 2:16PM by LauraJoy 0 Comments -

Past: Mayan women and men were basically equal except the men worked a little harder. As the spanish women came, they referred to themselves as upperclass and forced the mayans out of their land and into slavery. In later year, the civil war took most of the men to war leaving the women to take care of the house while getting low payed jobs and working in horrible conditions.

Present: Women in Guatemala earned the right to vote in 1945. Women handle domestic work and work beside their husband on coffee plantations. Women must retain high levels of honor or else it will bring down the husband. More then half of the illiterate people in Guatemala are women.
